Understanding VOC and VOC Requirements

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are commonly found in many different solvent-based paints. VOCs are compounds that have a high vapor pressure and low water solubility – properties that create many desirable qualities in industrial coatings. VOCs are becoming increasingly regulated, so it’s important for purchasers and providers of paint to be knowledgeable about VOCs.

Benefits of VOCs in Paint
• Makes Paint Easier to Apply – VOCs help dissolve and disperse pigments evenly throughout the paint, which can help make it easier to apply with better application properties.
• Preserves Paint – Some VOCs promote the longevity of paint, extending the life of paint stored for longer periods of time.
• Promotes Product Longevity – In some cases, VOCs can improve the performance and durability of the paint, extending the life of the coating and the product it protects.

Low- and No-VOC Alternatives
There is a growing demand for low- and no-VOC coatings. Low-VOC paint has less than 50 grams of volatile organic compounds per liter. No-VOC paints may still contain volatile organic compounds, but they must contain less than 5 grams per liter.
Low- and no-VOC alternatives have slightly different characteristics and can provide high-quality, durable performance with good application properties.

VOC Regulations
It is important that paint providers and users understand local and applicable VOC regulations for their operations. Helpful resources include the EPA (epa.gov), third-party consultants or agencies, and local state or municipality resources.
